Mechanical Properties of Nanomaterials Nanomaterials are deformed via grain bondary processes as dislocation generation via Frank-Reed sources is impossible. Therefore, in the regime of grain boundary creep, the hardness decreases with decreasing grain size. The Ashby-Verral process is a "grain-boundary switching" process.
